Sustainable cities are designed to function and flourish while creating a minimal impact on the environment. The goal is to meet the energy demands of current and future generations using renewable sources power and manage resources effectively. At the September 2013 Vancouver Island GTEx Forum, a panel of municipal leaders will share insights for achieving a sustainable future on the Island.

About the Speakers

Name 1 Terri Martin
Description 1 Terri Martin is a Registered Professional Biologist in BC and the City of Campbell River’s Environmental Coordinator within the Sustainability Department. While her projects are varied, an important part of her work plan involves liaising with other city departments, organizations and the public to reduce development related impacts to environmentally sensitive lands. As a whole, the Sustainability Department is responsible for the overall development and management of the city’s sustainability and carbon neutral efforts.

Name 2 Chris Midgley
Description 2 Chris Midgley is the Manager of Energy and Sustainability for the Regional District of Nanaimo. He leads the department that implemented green building incentives, carbon neutral operations, as well as completed a Green Building Policy and a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Policy. Chris holds two Master’s degrees: Landscape Architecture from the University of British Columbia, and Environmental Studies from York University.

Name 3 Roy Brooke
Description 3 Roy Brooke is a sustainability professional who has held leadership positions on three continents. His experience spans urban sustainability, national politics, international development, and humanitarian affairs. Roy has led initiatives including: scaling-up environmental sustainability investment and programming in Rwanda, strengthening international environmental governance regimes, including in the Middle East, and developing and managing a federal programme to support sustainability leadership amongst Canadian corporations. He served as Director of Sustainability for the City of Victoria from 2011 to 2013.
